One Month In and a Ginger Nut Addiction

It’s been one month since joining the BC crew and it is safe to say I can shake off any shyness or apprehension I first brought with me coming into a studio environment. The time has flown by but has also felt so substantial. I have slotted nicely into the fast-paced work dynamic and have formed great relationships with everyone here. It’s such a positive and nurturing place that is helping me develop  as a designer. It’s such a privilege to able to pick the brains of people with so much experience in the industry!

Swinburne Industry Placement

Hi, I’m Jas and I’ve joined Bonney Creative as an Industry Placement student as part of the Swinburne’s Bachelor of Design (Honours). I’m super excited for this opportunity where I can learn and grow in a studio environment and work on real world briefs. I can’t wait to get stuck in to packaging projects and the strategic thinking behind them.

Bonney Creative - This Is Not a Bribe Student Note

Inspiring Young Designers

Over the weekend I was clearing out some stuff from one of those household cupboards that was filled with ‘I don’t know what to do with you’ archival boxes. I came across a little envelope from 2011 and inside was a carefully designed bespoke sleeve with a fake $100 bank note inside. The title read ‘This is not a bribe’ and was followed by this statement:

“Dear Amber, just a note to say thank you so much for a wonderful semester. I truly enjoyed your classes and I have been very encouraged by the genuine dedication and patience that you have shown towards our class. You truly have been a great inspiration, and I hope that you never grow weary in the work that you continue to do. Thank you.”

Improving Design Education

Last Monday I gave a lecture to first year students on brand and packaging design at a prominent University here in Melbourne. This is part of the students curriculum in the Communication Design undergraduate degree and something I have been involved in for the past 6 years. While my time in this area is not financially motivated, I was disappointed to hear several months ago, that I was not going to be invited back due to a cut in higher education funding that ultimately did not prioritise engaging industry in paid guest lectures. Needless to say, I gave the lecture pro-bono.

As a former student and educator of design, I passionately believe in the importance of engaging the broader design industry in the education and mentoring of young students. These are formulate and critical years for a young person and I see it as our role in industry to help inspire and guide them as a supplementary support system to their academic theory and practical course work.

Bonney Creative - Good Beer Week

A Very Good Week in Beer

Last week was indeed a very good week in the world of craft beer and I well and truly immersed myself in the celebrations! Yep “Good Beer Week” had so much going on that it was hard to keep up. With 9 days (a true brewers week) of specialty intimate events, the CBIA Craft Brewers Conference, the Australian International Beer Awards and finishing off with GABS. It was a week that well and truly positioned Melbourne as the hub of craft beer in the Southern Hemisphere and a top 5 global craft beer destination.

Swinburne Advanced Packaging – Mentor Programme

This semester Bonney Creative took part in a mentoring program in partnership with Swinburne University of Technology. The Advanced Packaging Unit aimed to give students with a talent and interest in packaging design, live interactive feedback and tuition during key milestones of the semester unit.

Both Damian Kelly and Amber Bonney took part in the program and we had the tough decision of awarding 1 outstanding student with a 6 month Mentoring Program. A very big congratulations to Alex Reid for his submission and selection for this program. Alex showed great initiative throughout the process with a particular skill that demonstrated his aptitude for conceptual thinking, illustration and brand design.
